“Hello world, meet Sergei Polunin”, said David LaChapelle on February 9th.
Since then, the ballet take on the famous Hozier ´s single Take Me To Church went viral together with Polunin´s name. The Ukrainian 25-year-old started dancing at the age of 4, became a principal dancer with the British Royal Ballet and is currently a principal dancer with The Stanislavsky Music Theatre and the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre in Russia. Long story short, he is one immensly talented and hardworking man.
Mastermind behind the choreography is Jade Hale-Christofi of Irish origin, dancer since the age of 7. His resume is no less impressive than Polunin´s. Jade joined Ballet de Opera National du Rhin in France performing in Marteau Sana Maritre, The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, The Prince of the Pagodas – Soloist, Appolo, Firebird – where in the last two as principal dancer. In 2008 he joined Ballet Black, dancing to the works of Richard Alston, Martin Lawrence, Liam Scarlett, Antonia Franceschi and Henri Oguike to name a few. 2011-2012 he was a guest principal dancer in The Nutcracker in Ballet Japan.
Hozier himself is Irish, his single first published on September 16, 2013. Take Me To Church grew in popularity in May 2014 when he performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, reaching Billboard Hot 100(USA standard record chart weekly based on radio play, online streaming and sales) in December of the same year. My first encounter with this song was over broken Skype conversation and I was charmed forever. Thank you, my dearest friend for blasting it on that sunny morning and setting my melancholic mood for days to come ;).
Sergei Polunin and Jade Hale-Christofi gave the song new breath and new talk is up and about. Is it too hopeful to wish for cooperation between them and Maddie Ziegler (mini-Sia)?
Do you remember the first time you heard Hozier ´s single? What were you doing?
